Gourry Gabriev

Mighty yet dimwitted swordsman and companion of Lina Inverse.

Gourry Gabriev

Gourry Gabriev (Japanese: ガウリイ・ガブリエフ, Hepburn: Gaurī Gaburiefu) is a fictional character from the Japanese media franchise *Slayers*. He is a powerful but unintelligent mercenary swordsman who becomes a traveling companion and self-appointed protector of the sorceress Lina Inverse. Alongside Lina, he is one of the more popular characters, though his main role is comic relief. (Note: Naga the Serpent appears only in the prequel stories and is not part of the main cast with Gourry and Lina.)

Gourry is heroic, calm, and chivalrous, which contrasts with Lina's hot-tempered and greedy personality. He is also known for his low intelligence and bluntness, often unintentionally hurting others' feelings or embarrassing Lina. His lack of development is hinted to stem from his not being proud of his past.

Around 20 years old, Gourry is the tallest main character at 6'3" (191 cm) and the oldest human in the group. He is handsome and well-built, with long blonde hair and blue eyes, and is notorious for his poor memory and limited intellect. He is one of the few characters who can eat nearly as much as Lina, despite being much larger.

Gourry first appears when he encounters Lina after she has defeated a group of bandits. Mistaking her for a lost child, he offers to escort her home, and she plays along. He then shifts into the nice guy persona that defines him for the rest of the series.

He remains Lina's closest and most consistent companion, traveling with her even when their other friends, Zelgadis and Amelia, are absent. Though Lina initially claimed she only kept him around for his family heirloom, the Sword of Light, they continue traveling together long after he loses it, with Lina saying she stays to help him find a new sword. Despite her frustration with his mental slowness and blunt observations about her flaws—which often lead to her hitting him with objects or spells—Lina eventually falls in love with him, and he apparently loves her back. However, their relationship never fully develops in the manga, light novels, or anime, partly because Lina is an excitable, whimsical teenager not good at expressing romantic feelings. Their bond is shown subtly, such as through their effective teamwork and ability to sense each other's thoughts. In the novel series (specifically volume 8), they share a kiss, which they both remember, though this does not occur in the ani

Lore & Background

Gourry is portrayed as heroic, having a calm demeanor and a chivalrous attitude that serves as a foil to Lina Inverse's fiery temper tantrums and greedy disposition. He is also characterized by his lack of intelligence and his tendency to put things bluntly without any tact, occasionally hurting the feelings of others or humiliating Lina without meaning to. It has been implied his relative lack of development is due to the fact Gourry probably is not very proud of his past. Aged around 20, Gourry is the tallest of the main cast (6'3" or 191 cm) and the oldest human of the party. He is handsome and well built, with long blonde hair and blue eyes, and notorious for his poor memory and also limited intelligence. He is one of the few characters who can eat almost as much as Lina Inverse, even accounting for the fact he is much taller and structurally larger than she is. Gourry is the descendant of the original wielder of the Sword of Light, though that original wielder is unnamed and not referred to as the 'Swordsman of Light' in canon.

Reader's Guide

Gourry Gabriev is a central figure in the Slayers franchise, serving as both comic relief and a foil to the protagonist Lina Inverse. His significance lies in his role as a device for exposition: his ignorance forces other characters to verbalize facts about the world, allowing the audience to learn what is assumed to be well known. Despite his lack of everyday intelligence, he is an incredible swordsman, performing extremely well against both regular and supernatural foes. He also often shows excellent skills of observation, intuition, and is a good judge of character, though sometimes it comes a bit late to be of any good. A notable example is that he apparently figured out Xellos was not human long before anyone else did. In the original novels, his intelligence is portrayed more as tactless and slightly out-of-the-loop rather than idiotic, and it is heavily implied that Gourry tends to purposely obfuscate his intelligence most of the time to annoy or tease Lina, as well as deceive others into underestimating him. His legacy includes appearances in all Slayers video games, various merchandise, and guest appearances in several non-Slayers video games. In the science fiction themed series Lost Universe, Lina and Gourry were mixed to create its male protagonist Kain Blueriver, complete with its version of the Sword of Light, called Psi-Blade.
